About the Bot
Pong was my first combat robot built to compete in the 1 lb Plastic class. It weighed in at only 0.902 lb, significantly under the weight limit. Pong's weapon is full body spinner, meaning that the entire bot rotates at tremendous speeds turning your own body into a weapon. This style of combat robot is most commonly known as a "Melty Brain". Pong has an effective diameter of 145mm (~5.7in).
Pong's single drive motor suffers from immense overheating issues. In an effort to combat this issue the mounting system for the motor was designed with airflow in mind, giving it that distinct rib cage esthetic. This bot was created as a challenge to myself to build a bot for the 1 lb weight class using the electronics from my now-retired Vasilis 1.0 and Hyphen 1.0.
Pong is named after the classic 1972 video game where a white ball is bounced back and forth between two paddles. In the arena Pong definitely lives up to its name, as it takes nearly zero damage while blasting itself between the arena walls in the hopes of locating its opponent.
